THE STORY OF SPACE IN TIME
Rio Adiwijaya & Yasser Rizky
Where and when are we...? Space and time are puzzling notions. Space does not refer to any physical fact, and neither does time. However, both do not merely belong to the imaginary world of arts. The sciences definitely presuppose the context of space and time, in which every factual object can be understood as exists, i.e., in a particular spatial coordinate, for how long, in what time, etc. For their intangible nature, space and time are nevertheless not a self-evident phenomenon. They are indeed philosophical concepts that develops through our history, from the antiquity / premodern, through the modern, to today / the contemporary era. Our first work is a graphic commentary on the concept of two-dimensional Euclidian space originated in the Antiquity (the era of Socrates, Plato, Aristotle). Our second work is built upon the concept of three-dimensional Cartesian space as conceived by the Modern thinkers (e.g., Descartes, Newton, Kant). Our third work is a playful rendition of four-dimensional Einsteinian space (where the fourth dimension is time that merges with space into spacetime, a continuum that distorts in relationships to enormous mass, and over the speed of light.) The first work suggests the shape of the letter S, while the second forms the letter PA, and the third renders the letter CE. Seen as a whole, it reads S_PA_CE, a primary notion that develops its richness and complexity through our three stages or ‘triptych’ of TIME / history.
