2026 Media X Space: Future, Time, and Ecology

Future disposition in time is paradoxical, it holds both quality of uncertainty and certainty. It is a segment of time, but also stand as one of human’s motivators of its existence in time and space. Time does not exist from the point of view of physics. It is rather a subjective human perception of entropy, which will then be influenced by many factors related to the ecosystem of the universe. Through this exhibition theme, artists, designers and the public from asia pacific community will engaged in a conversation through artworks, to find new meaning, regarding their existence alongside with other living being and the nature, so the world can once again become more bearable.

We are pleased to announce an exhibition open call for Future, Time, and Ecology: Ancestral Knowledge as a Bridge to the Future, a collaborative program between BINUS University (School of Design, Master of Design-BGP, Graphic Design & New Media-International), ARCOLABS, and Museum MACAN. We invite students, lecturers, and practitioner-researchers from the Asia Pacific region to engage with this unique professional pipeline.

Critical (& Creative) Thinking: Ancestral Wisdom to Face the Future
Ayu Utami
Ayu Utami is an activist, journalist, and Indonesian author who became widely known after her novel Saman won the Jakarta Arts Council's novel writing competition in 1998. In addition, she is the recipient of the 2000 Prince Claus Award, the 2008 Khatulistiwa Literary Award for her novel Bilangan Fu, the Mastera (Southeast Asian Literary Council) Award for Creative Writers, and the 2018 Ahmad Bakrie Award for Literature. For the past four years, Ayu Utami has organized the "RASA" Literary Award, a literary competition for emerging writers, where the first prize of 10 million rupiah is awarded directly by her. At Komunitas Utan Kayu, Ayu Utami serves as the Program Director, designing Philosophy Underground, Beranda Filsafat, and other programs grounded in critical thinking. She aspires to enrich the intellectual life of the nation by inviting everyone to learn, think, and sharpen their creative abilities.
Reading the Future: Co-Create with Generative AI
Ray LC, MFA, PhD.
RAY builds empathic bonds between machines and humans using spatial interactions, uniting expertise in HCI, new media, and narratives. Exhibits: Elektra, NYSCI, Ars Electronica, CVPR, New Museum, JCCAC, Osage, Goethe Institute, HKAC, PMQ, Science Gallery MSU, IEEE VISAP, SIGGRAPH Asia, Tai Kwun, ACC Gwangju. Awards: Japan JSPS, Microsoft Imagine Cup, Verizon, Adobe Design Award, Davis Peace Foundation, NY Foundation for the Arts, HKADC, HKRGC GRF. RAY is a fan of SNES era Japanese role-playing games and active in the blues dance community.
Artistic Development Utilizing Traditional Technology and Manual Production
Adi Sundoro
Adi Sundoro is a visual artist, printmaker, and lecturer in the Visual Communication Design – New Media program at BINUS University. With a deep passion for printmaking, he explores traditional and manual printing techniques, often presenting them in experimental formats to respond to everyday social phenomena. His award-winning works have been exhibited globally, and he recently collaborated with Museum MACAN for their 2025 Children's Art Space project.
